San Francisco, located on the west coast of the United States in California, is a city known for its iconic landmarks, cultural diversity, and progressive spirit. This blog will guide you through 9 things you must do when visiting the city.
Alcatraz
Alcatraz, also known as “the rock” is a small island located in the San Francisco bay. Renowned for its historical significance and the notorious federal prison, Alcatraz had become an iconic symbol of mystery and intrigue.
You are only able to reach Alcatraz by boat (I would not suggest swimming). Plan the boat trip in advance due to the limited number of tickets. You can buy a ticket online or buy a ticket at the harbor.
Fisherman’s Wharf
Fisherman’s Wharf, a vibrant waterfront neighborhood in San Francisco, is a bustling and iconic destination that captures the essence of the city’s maritime heritage. Located along the northern waterfront, this historic area teems with a delightful mix of attractions, shops, restaurants, and entertainment, making it a favorite among locals and visitors alike.
Golden Gate Bridge
The golden gate bridge is the most iconic and recognizable bridge in the world. Admire the bridge from multiple viewpoints like the battery west trail, north vista point and battery spencer viewpoint. We visited the bridge during sunrise and were able to take some beautiful pictures.
You can also walk and cycle on the bridge. You can rent an (electric) bike in small shops around the bridge. It is unique to experience the Golden Gate Bridge in this way.
COIT Tower
The tower is a great place to admire San Francisco from above. The tower is 64 meters / 210 feet high and was constructed in 1934. When we visited the tower, the elevator was not working, so be prepared to walk some stairs. The entrance fee for an adult is 10 dollars.
Baker & Marshall’s beach
Both beaches will provide beautiful views of the Golden Gate Bridge. Watch the birds on the beach that are walking back and forth with the waves to eat small fish. After visiting the beach, I would advise to drive through the sea cliff area and observe the multi million dollar villa’s.
Painted Ladies
The painted ladies are Victorian and Edwardian houses located at 710–720 Steiner Street. Park your car in the park for free and enjoy the architectural homes with the San Francisco skyline in the background.
Lombard street
Lombard street is a steep winding road that features eight hairpin turns. Use the car to drive through the street, it is a fun activity.
Palace of fine arts
The palace of fine arts is a gorgeous architectural marvel located in the Marina District. The palace was constructed in 1915 for the Panama Pacific International exposition in San Francisco. Visiting the palace will take around 20 minutes.
Enjoy the city life
San Francisco has much more to offer than the Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz and other activities. When on holiday, take the time to really experience the city. Go to a Giants game, visit rooftop bars and enjoy taco Tuesday with the locals.
